A Modern Classic...

The Killer (1989)

Chow Yun-Fat and John Woo, these two men make a great team, and the Killer proves it. This is one heck of a movie and it is a film that I can watch over and over again.

John Woo had yet to become a household name when he directed this movie, but it certainly shows why he would soon become a major Hollywood director soon afterward. Chow Yun-Fat would also find Hollywood success after this movie received American distribution. This picture also turned a lot of people onto Hong Kong action movies.

The story is fairly simple, Chow is a hit-man who accidently blinds a girl during a job that goes bad, and he is guilt-ridden over the situation. He befriends the young woman, although she is completely unaware of his involvement in her injury, and a romance eventually develops between them. Chow wants to leave his work behind, but he also wants to obtain enough money to pay for an operation that might enable the girl to see again, and so he agrees to take on one last hit. Unfortunately, his boss has another idea, and that would be to make Chow’s career end on a more permanent note, as in death instead of retirement. Meanwhile, Danny Lee is a cop who is hot on Chow’s trail, and obsessed with bringing him to justice.

The direction is excellent, the film oozes with style, and the acting is superb. Bottom line, this is a modern classic, and I highly recommend it.
