More than Noodles...

A few years back, a friend of mine who had recently entered college was complaining about something, he used to watch a lot of anime, and he had noticed that a lot of the characters seemed to always be eating ramen. But, he was upset that he couldn’t find any ramen worth eating on a fairly regular basis, and he found this upsetting, because on a college student’s budget, this could be an economical snack, if he could just find some that he actually found to be tasty.

Keeping that friend of mine in mind, I am going to start writing about some of the lesser known to Americans, but well-worth seeking out products of the instant noodle variety. To start with, people need to realize that there is far more to life than Nissin; or Maruchan, there are tons of tasty alternatives, but you need to know where to look for them.

Start by seeking out an Asian grocer, these are starting become more common than they used to be, and they are the best source for good ramen. Plus, seek out something new, something you’ve never seen before, and look for something that appears to be less Americanized. Usually, these better varieties come with multiple flavor packets, one packet is the powdered broth mix, another is dehydrated vegetable product, and the third is generally some sort of flavored oil. Use all three of them and you’ll find something that seems to be a treasure when compared to your standard package of Top Ramen.

Some brands to keep an eye out for are Kung-Fu, Vifon, and Maggi (if you’re looking for an Indian twist). In the future, I will start to write some reviews of individual brands, and flavors. But, until then, try something off of the beaten path, and visit your local Asian grocer to find some decent instant noodles.
